Gopi Geet

Gopi Geet is a deeply devotional and emotional hymn from the Shrimad Bhagavatam, sung by the Gopis of Vrindavan during Shri Krishna’s disappearance from the Rasa Leela. Overwhelmed by separation, the Gopis remember Krishna’s beautiful form, sweet smile, loving words, divine pastimes, and the enchanting sound of His flute. Through these heartfelt verses, they express their intense longing and pray for His return.

The hymn beautifully represents Viraha Bhakti—devotion intensified by separation from the Divine. Although the Gopis experience deep sorrow, their love remains completely selfless. They do not seek wealth, comfort, power, or liberation; their only desire is to see Shri Krishna and serve Him with complete devotion. Gopi Geet teaches that true devotion means surrendering the heart entirely to God and remembering Him in every situation.

Gopi Geet is one of the most touching and spiritually significant devotional hymns dedicated to Lord Shri Krishna. It appears in the 31st chapter of the 10th Canto of the Shrimad Bhagavatam and consists of 19 sacred verses. The Gopis sing these verses while searching for Krishna after He suddenly disappears during the divine Rasa Leela in Vrindavan.

In Gopi Geet, the Gopis praise Krishna as the protector of Vrindavan, the beloved of His devotees, and the Supreme Soul present within every living being. They remember how He protected the people of Vraja from dangerous demons, storms, fire, poisonous water, and other troubles. They also describe the spiritual beauty of His lotus eyes, gentle smile, charming face, melodious flute, and soft lotus feet.

The emotions expressed in Gopi Geet are not ordinary worldly attachment. They represent the highest form of pure and unconditional devotion, in which the devotee forgets personal happiness and lives only for the happiness of the Lord. The pain of separation becomes a sacred path through which love, remembrance, surrender, and spiritual longing reach their highest intensity.

Reciting or listening to Gopi Geet with faith is believed to deepen devotion toward Shri Radha-Krishna, purify the heart, calm the mind, and strengthen one’s connection with the Divine. It is especially meaningful for devotees who follow Krishna Bhakti, participate in Bhagavat Katha, observe devotional practices, or wish to experience the sweetness of Vrindavan’s loving spiritual tradition.
