Yogini Ekadashi

Yogini Ekadashi

Yogini Ekadashi is a sacred Hindu fasting day dedicated to Lord Vishnu. It is observed during the Krishna Paksha of the Ashadha month and is considered especially beneficial for seeking forgiveness, spiritual purification, and freedom from past sins. According to Hindu scriptures, observing this vrat with devotion can help devotees overcome negative habits, reduce the burden of past karma, and receive the blessings of Lord Vishnu.

The traditional story of Yogini Ekadashi describes Hemamali, a gardener in the service of Lord Kubera. Due to his negligence, he was cursed and separated from his family. After receiving guidance from Sage Markandeya, Hemamali observed Yogini Ekadashi with complete faith. Through the spiritual merit of the vrat, he was freed from the curse and regained his health, happiness, and honour.

Devotees usually take a sankalp, maintain purity, avoid grains and tamasic food, worship Lord Vishnu, chant Vishnu mantras, read the Yogini Ekadashi Vrat Katha, and remain engaged in prayer and charitable activities. The fast is traditionally concluded through Paran on Dwadashi at the prescribed time.

Yogini Ekadashi is one of the twenty-four principal Ekadashi observances of the Hindu calendar. Dedicated to Lord Vishnu, this auspicious vrat represents self-control, repentance, devotion, and inner transformation. The word “Yogini” is associated with spiritual discipline and liberation from the consequences of wrongful actions. Therefore, this Ekadashi is believed to offer devotees an opportunity to recognise their mistakes, seek divine forgiveness, and begin a more virtuous life.

The importance of Yogini Ekadashi is explained through the story of Hemamali, who served as a gardener in the kingdom of Lord Kubera. His duty was to collect beautiful flowers for the worship of Lord Shiva. One day, distracted by worldly attachment, he failed to perform his responsibility on time. Angered by his negligence, Lord Kubera cursed him to suffer from disease and separation.

While wandering in distress, Hemamali met Sage Markandeya and honestly narrated his condition. The compassionate sage advised him to observe Yogini Ekadashi with sincerity and devotion. Hemamali followed the instructions, worshipped Lord Vishnu, maintained the fast, and prayed for forgiveness. As a result of the spiritual merit earned through the vrat, he was liberated from the curse and restored to a peaceful and prosperous life.

On Yogini Ekadashi, devotees wake up early, take a bath, clean the place of worship, and take a sankalp before Lord Vishnu. The deity is worshipped with flowers, incense, lamps, fruits, Tulsi leaves, and other sacred offerings. Devotees may chant “Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya” or recite the Vishnu Sahasranama. Reading or listening to the Yogini Ekadashi Vrat Katha is also considered an important part of the observance.

Those who are physically capable may observe a complete fast, while others can follow a fruit-based or sattvic diet according to their health. Rice, wheat, lentils, onion, garlic, alcohol, and non-vegetarian food should be avoided. The day should be spent peacefully without anger, dishonesty, criticism, or harmful behaviour. Offering food, clothes, or financial assistance to needy people further enhances the spiritual value of the vrat.

According to traditional belief, Yogini Ekadashi helps purify the mind, body, and soul. It inspires devotees to control their senses, fulfil their responsibilities honestly, and move towards a disciplined spiritual life. However, the vrat should not be treated merely as abstaining from food. Its true purpose is to develop compassion, humility, forgiveness, devotion, and self-awareness.

Har Ghar Pandit Ji Advice: Before observing Yogini Ekadashi, devotees should check the correct local Ekadashi Tithi and Dwadashi Paran time. Elderly people, pregnant women, children, and those with medical conditions should follow the fast according to their health and professional medical advice. True devotion, pure conduct, and sincere prayer are more important than performing an overly difficult fast.
