Mohini Ekadashi

Mohini Ekadashi

Mohini Ekadashi is a sacred fasting day dedicated to Lord Vishnu and his divine Mohini incarnation. It is observed on the Ekadashi Tithi of Shukla Paksha in the Hindu month of Vaishakh, usually falling in April or May. According to Hindu tradition, Lord Vishnu assumed the enchanting form of Mohini to protect dharma and distribute the nectar of immortality among the gods. Devotees observe this vrat to seek forgiveness for past mistakes, purify their minds, overcome negative habits, and receive Lord Vishnu’s blessings.

On this day, devotees take a spiritual vow, worship Lord Vishnu and Goddess Lakshmi, recite the Mohini Ekadashi Vrat Katha, chant Vishnu mantras, and avoid grains, rice, and tamasic food. Many people observe a fruit-based or waterless fast according to their health and capacity. The fast is concluded through proper Parana on Dwadashi Tithi. Mohini Ekadashi inspires devotees to rise above illusion, attachment, anger, greed, and confusion and follow the path of truth, devotion, discipline, and righteousness.

Mohini Ekadashi holds great religious and spiritual importance in Hinduism. The word “Mohini” refers to the captivating female incarnation of Lord Vishnu. According to sacred traditions, during the Samudra Manthan, when the nectar of immortality appeared, Lord Vishnu took the form of Mohini to ensure that the divine nectar reached the devas and did not fall into the hands of destructive forces. Therefore, Mohini Ekadashi represents the victory of wisdom, righteousness, and divine consciousness over deception, temptation, and negativity.

Devotees begin the observance by following purity and restraint from Dashami Tithi. On Ekadashi morning, they bathe early, clean the worship area, and take a Sankalp to observe the vrat sincerely. An idol or picture of Lord Vishnu is worshipped with yellow flowers, Tulsi leaves, incense, a lamp, fruits, and sattvic offerings. Mantras such as “Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya” and “Om Namo Narayanaya” may be chanted. Reading the Vishnu Sahasranama, listening to the Mohini Ekadashi Vrat Katha, performing bhajan-kirtan, and offering charity are also considered highly auspicious.

The spiritual meaning of Mohini Ekadashi extends beyond fasting from food. It encourages devotees to control their thoughts, speech, desires, and behaviour. The vrat teaches that worldly attractions can distract a person from their true purpose, while devotion and self-discipline bring clarity and inner stability. Devotees should avoid anger, dishonesty, criticism, violence, intoxication, and unnecessary indulgence. The day should be spent in prayer, meditation, service, and remembrance of Lord Vishnu.

It is believed that observing Mohini Ekadashi with faith can help reduce the burden of past sins, remove emotional confusion, strengthen willpower, and bring peace and prosperity into life. The fast should be concluded on Dwadashi after offering prayers and food or donations to a deserving person. The exact Parana time may vary according to the location and local Panchang.

Advice from Har Ghar Pandit Ji: Observe Mohini Ekadashi according to your health and personal capacity. Elderly people, pregnant women, children, and those with medical conditions should avoid strict fasting without proper guidance. The purity of intention, devotion to Lord Vishnu, sattvic conduct, and compassion toward others are more important than physical hardship.
