Krishna Janam Katha
Krishna Janam Katha narrates the divine birth of Lord Krishna, the eighth incarnation of Lord Vishnu. He was born at midnight on Krishna Paksha Ashtami in Mathura to Devaki and Vasudeva. His birth marked the beginning of the end of King Kansa’s cruelty and the restoration of dharma. The story describes the prophecy about Kansa’s downfall, the imprisonment of Devaki and Vasudeva, Krishna’s miraculous birth, and his safe journey across the Yamuna River to Gokul.
Krishna Janam Katha is the sacred story of Lord Krishna’s miraculous birth. King Kansa of Mathura imprisoned his sister Devaki and her husband Vasudeva after hearing a divine prophecy that Devaki’s eighth son would cause his death. Fearing the prophecy, Kansa killed their first six children, while the seventh child, Balarama, was divinely transferred to the womb of Rohini.
When the time came for the eighth child’s birth, Lord Krishna appeared at midnight in the prison as the divine incarnation of Lord Vishnu. At that moment, the prison guards fell asleep, the chains binding Vasudeva opened, and the locked prison doors unlocked automatically. Following divine instructions, Vasudeva carried the newborn Krishna in a basket across the overflowing Yamuna River to Gokul.
In Gokul, Vasudeva exchanged Krishna with the newborn daughter of Nanda and Yashoda and safely returned to the prison. When Kansa tried to kill the baby girl, she transformed into Goddess Yogmaya and warned him that the one destined to destroy him had already been born elsewhere.
Krishna Janam Katha symbolises the victory of dharma over adharma, hope over fear, and divine protection over evil. It is especially recited during Janmashtami celebrations, accompanied by fasting, bhajans, kirtan, prayer and midnight worship. Listening to or reading this sacred story is believed to bring peace, devotion, positivity and the blessings of Lord Krishna.
