History of Muri Mata Temple

The present temple building is relatively modern, but the religious tradition of the sacred site is older.

According to local accounts, the area near Golwaghat was covered with dense forest several decades ago. Two saints travelling through the region stopped beneath a neem tree to rest for the night.

During the night, the saints reportedly had a divine dream in which they were shown that a sacred Pindi of Goddess Durga was buried in the soil near the roots of the neem tree.

The following morning, they called residents from nearby villages and asked them to remove the soil. During the excavation, an ancient Pindi was discovered. The place was cleaned, and worship of the Goddess began beneath the neem tree.

As devotees started visiting the shrine, many believed that their prayers and wishes had been fulfilled. With contributions from these devotees, construction of the present temple began. The shrine was gradually expanded into the temple complex seen today.

Who Built Muri Mata Temple?

The sacred Pindi was discovered with the help of two saints and local villagers. Worship initially began under a neem tree without a permanent temple structure.

The present temple was constructed gradually with donations and voluntary support from devotees whose wishes were believed to have been fulfilled by Maa Mari Mata. Local priests, residents and religious communities continued to develop and maintain the temple.

Legend of the Sacred Pindi

According to local tradition, two saints rested beneath a neem tree in the forest near Golwaghat. During the night, Maa Durga appeared in their dream and revealed the location of her sacred Pindi.

When the soil was removed, the saints and villagers found the ancient Pindi exactly where the dream had indicated. The Pindi was cleaned and installed beneath the tree for regular worship.

Devotees believe that Maa Mari Mata manifested at this place to protect the surrounding region and bless those who approach her with sincere devotion.
