Ram Navami Puja Vidhi is a sacred worship ritual performed to celebrate the birth anniversary of Lord Shri Ram, the seventh incarnation of Lord Vishnu. On this auspicious day, devotees wake up early, take a holy bath, clean the place of worship and observe a fast with devotion. An idol or picture of Lord Ram, Mata Sita, Lakshman Ji and Hanuman Ji is placed on a clean altar and decorated with flowers.
The puja begins with Sankalp, followed by the worship of Lord Ganesha and Kalash Sthapana. Devotees offer water, Panchamrit, clothes, sandalwood, flowers, incense, a ghee lamp, fruits and sweets to Lord Ram. Ram Raksha Stotra, Ram Chalisa, Shri Ram mantras or passages from Ramcharitmanas are recited. The worship concludes with Shri Ram Aarti, distribution of prasad and prayers for happiness, peace, prosperity and righteous conduct.
Har Ghar Pandit Ji advises devotees to perform the puja with a pure heart, peaceful mind and complete faith. Even if elaborate arrangements are not possible, a simple worship performed with sincerity, devotion and remembrance of Lord Ram is considered spiritually rewarding.
Ram Navami is celebrated on the Navami Tithi of Shukla Paksha in the Hindu month of Chaitra. According to religious tradition, Lord Shri Ram was born in Ayodhya during Madhyahna, or the afternoon period. Therefore, performing his worship during the auspicious Madhyahna Muhurat is considered especially beneficial.
For the puja, devotees should clean their home and place of worship, take a bath and wear clean clothes. Cover a wooden platform with a red or yellow cloth and place an idol or picture of Lord Ram along with Mata Sita, Lakshman Ji and Hanuman Ji. Install a Kalash filled with clean water and decorated with mango leaves and a coconut. Begin the worship by taking a Sankalp and invoking Lord Ganesha, followed by prayers to all deities.
If a small idol of Bal Ram is available, it may be ceremonially bathed with water or Panchamrit and dressed in clean clothes. Offer roli, sandalwood paste, akshat, sacred thread, flowers, Tulsi leaves, incense, a ghee lamp, seasonal fruits, kheer, halwa, panjiri or other sattvic food. Tulsi leaves should be offered with devotion, as they are especially dear to Lord Vishnu and his incarnations.
Chant sacred mantras such as “Om Shri Ramaya Namah” or “Shri Ram Jai Ram Jai Jai Ram.” Devotees may also recite Ram Chalisa, Ram Raksha Stotra, Sundarkand, Shri Ram Stuti or selected passages from Ramcharitmanas. At the believed time of Lord Ram’s birth, celebrate the Janmotsav with devotional songs, the ringing of bells and joyful chants of “Jai Shri Ram.”
Conclude the worship by performing Shri Ram Aarti and praying for the well-being of the family. Seek forgiveness for any unintentional mistakes made during the ritual and distribute prasad among everyone. Those observing a fast should maintain purity of thought and conduct, avoid anger and negative speech, and spend the day remembering Lord Ram.
According to Har Ghar Pandit Ji, devotees should focus not only on the external rituals of Ram Navami but also on adopting the values of Lord Shri Ram in their daily lives. Speaking the truth, respecting parents and elders, fulfilling responsibilities honestly, helping those in need and maintaining harmony within the family are among the most meaningful ways to honour Lord Ram.
Devotees are also advised to keep the puja materials ready in advance and perform the worship during the appropriate Madhyahna Muhurat. If there is any uncertainty regarding the correct Muhurat, required puja materials, mantra pronunciation or detailed rituals, guidance from a knowledgeable Pandit Ji may be taken. Feeding the needy, donating food or clothes and serving cows on Ram Navami are also considered auspicious.
Har Ghar Pandit Ji recommends that every family chant the name of Shri Ram together, read a portion of Ramcharitmanas and pray for peace, good health and prosperity. The true purpose of Ram Navami worship is to purify the mind and inspire devotees to follow the path of truth, dignity, compassion, duty and devotion shown by Maryada Purushottam Shri Ram.
