Shri Sunderkand
Shri Sunderkand is one of the most sacred and inspiring chapters of the Ramcharitmanas, composed by Goswami Tulsidas Ji. It mainly describes the courage, devotion, intelligence, and extraordinary strength of Lord Hanuman. The story begins with Hanuman Ji crossing the vast ocean in search of Mata Sita. During his journey, he overcomes several obstacles and reaches Lanka, where he finds Mata Sita in Ashok Vatika.
Hanuman Ji gives Lord Shri Ram’s ring to Mata Sita and assures her that Shri Ram will soon come to rescue her. He then displays his divine power by destroying Ashok Vatika, defeating many demons, and burning Lanka with his fiery tail. After completing his mission, Hanuman Ji returns to Shri Ram with the good news of Mata Sita’s whereabouts.
Shri Sunderkand beautifully represents unwavering faith, selfless service, courage, wisdom, and complete devotion to God. Its recitation is believed to remove fear, negativity, difficulties, and mental stress while bringing peace, strength, confidence, and divine protection into the devotee’s life.
Shri Sunderkand is the fifth Kanda of the Ramcharitmanas and is entirely dedicated to the heroic journey and divine deeds of Lord Hanuman. The word “Sunder” means beautiful, and this chapter is considered beautiful because it reveals the pure devotion, noble character, spiritual strength, and selfless service of Hanuman Ji.
The chapter begins when Jambavan reminds Hanuman Ji of his immense divine powers. Filled with confidence and devotion to Lord Shri Ram, Hanuman Ji takes a mighty leap across the ocean to reach Lanka. On the way, he encounters several challenges, including Mainaka Mountain, Surasa, and the demoness Simhika. Hanuman Ji faces each obstacle with intelligence, patience, courage, and strength.
After entering Lanka, Hanuman Ji carefully searches for Mata Sita and eventually finds her sitting sorrowfully beneath a tree in Ashok Vatika. He introduces himself as the messenger of Lord Shri Ram and presents Shri Ram’s ring as proof. His comforting words restore hope and faith in Mata Sita’s heart. She gives him her Chudamani and a message to deliver to Shri Ram.
Before leaving Lanka, Hanuman Ji destroys Ashok Vatika and defeats many powerful warriors of Ravana’s army. When Ravana’s soldiers set fire to his tail, Hanuman Ji uses the flames to burn a large part of Lanka. He then safely returns to Lord Shri Ram and shares the joyful news that Mata Sita has been found.
The recitation of Shri Sunderkand is considered highly auspicious. Devotees believe that it helps overcome obstacles, fear, sorrow, negative thoughts, planetary difficulties, and challenging circumstances. It inspires people to remain devoted, confident, humble, and courageous during difficult times.
